This time span is estimated by the US Food and Drug Association (FDA) for keeping the food safe and healthy to consume. As for sushi, the dish may not go bad after two hours, but its taste most definitely changes the longer you let it sit out at room temperature.

Sushi can be made using different recipes, by changing the toppings, sauces or stuffing. While there are several methods and ingredients to prepare sushi, the rice is the main ingredient in every type of sushi there is. 

If you let sushi sit out for longer than necessary, there is a high risk of bacteria growing in the cooked, fermented rice as well as raw fish. The bacterial growth will make your favorite sushi contaminated and it would be a loss to dispose of it. Therefore, consider two to three hours as your safe zone for deliciously prepared sushi to be left out at your counter.

What Should You Do If Sushi Is Left Out Too Long? 

If you are well aware of the ingredients used in your sushi dish, it will help you to determine how long you can let it sit out without going bad. If sushi contains any type of protein ingredient such as fish, chicken or any meat, it cannot sit out for more than 2 hours. 

If you feel like you have left out your sushi dish for too long then it is better to check if it is still edible before you serve it. Sushi left at the counter for more than 4 hours should be discarded and not consumed to avoid any food borne illness.

How Long Can Sushi Be In The Car For? 

The temperature of your car matters if you wish to leave sushi inside your car. In hot and humid weather, if the car windows are rolled down and the car temperature match that of the surroundings, then sushi will only last up to an hour inside the car.

If the car is cold and the windows are rolled up, maintaining the normal temperature, then sushi will be good to eat for about two hours in your car. Make sure not to leave sushi in the car for more than 2 hours as it will not remain edible. 

Does Sushi Go Bad If Not Refrigerated? 

Sushi should be refrigerated if it is not to be consumed within a few hours of its preparation. If you have bought sushi from an unrefrigerated display, it should be consumed within 24 hours otherwise it should be kept refrigerated, if not, the sushi is most likely to go bad quickly when left out longer at room temperature. 

Does Sushi Go Bad If You Lose Power? 

The uncertain situations like power outages are quite unpredictable and it is natural to worry about the food preserved in the refrigerator. Most raw vegetables have little effect even if the power is out for a few hours. However, dairy products and cooked food’s safety are the ones you should be concerned about. 

As long as you keep sushi in the fridge it is unlikely to go bad during the power outage of a few hours, but if it takes longer you might have to check your sushi dish for any unpleasant odors to know if it has gone bad.

What Temperature Is Safe For Sushi? 

Cooked sushi is suitable to be kept refrigerated at 5 degrees Celsius or less. The sushi rice which contains vinegar can be kept at room temperature for a few hours but if no vinegar is used, then it must be kept at all times below 5 degrees Celsius inside the refrigerator.
