How to Store Yeast?

If you bake things regularly, then you may use yeast regularly. But if you bake things after intervals, you need to store the yeast to remain fresh when you use it another time. The shelf-life of yeast will be increased if you store it in good conditions.
If you have bought too much yeast for baking purposes and are planning to store it for a longer period, you need to take care of its storage conditions. Some important storage guidelines for yeast are given below.
Place in a cool and dry place
You should store an unopened package of yeast in a cool and dry place. The best place for storing the unopened package of yeast in the cupboard of your kitchen.
Store in the refrigerator
Once you have opened the dry yeast package, always keep in mind that you should not keep it at room temperature for too long. It should be stored in the refrigerator so that it can retain its quality for a long period.
It will be best to keep it in an airtight container to store it in the refrigerator or freezer. The same is the case with the cake yeast. It should be wrapped tightly and should be stored in the refrigerator.
Store in freezer
If you plan to store the dry yeast for a long period, you should store it in the freezer. Freezing will retain its quality and freshness for a long period. It is not recommended to freeze cake yeast.
Can You Freeze Yeast?
If the yeast is not stored properly, then it can go bad very quickly. If you want your yeast to retain its peak quality for a long time, you should store it in the freezer. Yeast can be frozen and then used.
Yeast is made up of living cells, so you should take good care of it not to be exposed to the air and moisture. Before storing the yeast in the freezer, make sure that it is sealed tightly. You can store dry yeast in the freezer for six months.
On the other hand, it is recommended not to freeze cake yeast to retain its peak quality for a long time in the refrigerator.
How Long Does Yeast Last?
The shelf life of all the types of yeast is quite different from each other. If we first talk about the dry yeast, it can retain its peak quality up to four months after passing the best by date labeled on the package.
The shelf-life of yeast also depends on the storage conditions. If it is stored properly, then it will last for as long as possible. So, dry yeast can retain its peak quality for up to six months if you store it in the refrigerator. Fresh yeast has a shelf life of almost three weeks. It is recommended to use it before the best date.
An unopened cake yeast package can last up to three weeks in the pantry, but in the refrigerator, it can last for three months. On the other hand, opened package of cake yeast can last for four months in the refrigerator and up to six months in the freezer.
How to Tell If Yeast Is Bad?
Like flour, yeast can also go bad if you will not take good care of it. There is a change in the taste, color, and smell of the yeast when it is not fresh.
- If you notice any change in the fresh yeast color, you should get rid of it at once.
- If you notice any sign of mold on the yeast, you should avoid using it.
A yeast freshness test is the best way to tell whether the yeast has gone bad or not. The yeast freshness test is given below:
- For dry yeast, take ΒΌ cup of warm water. 4o to 46 degrees is ideal for the yeast. If you take warmer water than this, the yeast will die.
- Add a packet of dry yeast and a teaspoon of sugar in it.
- Stir it well and then leave it for 1o minutes
- If the mixture rises to half the cup mark, then it is okay to use. But if it rises more than that, then it is the sign of spoiled yeast.
For fresh yeast or cake yeast:
- Take half a cup of water or milk. (32 to 35 degrees)
- Add a teaspoon of sugar in it and leave it for 10 minutes.
- You will notice a lot of form after 10 minutes, but if you don’t notice any form, it means that the yeast has gone bad. You should get rid of it.
