Keep it away from Moisture and Light
You can store Saffron in a clean, airtight jar or bottle where air cannot circulate freely. Otherwise, if it is exposed to moisture, it will start decaying and will start losing its properties in a short time.
After putting it in the jar or container, place it away from any source of light and moisture. You can also use a kitchen cabinet for this purpose, and it’s better to use wooden cabinets for storage because wood absorbs lesser heat than metals.
Do Not Refrigerate
If you are wondering whether you can use the refrigerator for its storage or not? Then it’s better if you don’t, especially when Saffron is frequently used in your house. Because moving in and out of the fridge will create the phenomenon of condensation. Which will increase moisture level and will ruin Saffron.
Balanced Temperature and Humidity
Keeping Saffron away from moisture and light does not mean that you should completely remove moisture and light, rather keep a balanced temperature, which is 15 to 20 degrees and humidity around 40 percent.

Yes, it is possible to freeze Saffron. Freezing Saffron isn’t a difficult task to do; all you have to do is to follow these points:
- Transfer all the amount you want to freeze on to a piece of paper or paper towel if you want. Take away all the unwanted particles to ensure their reliability.
- Wrap it in tin foil to protect it from light and air so that its color and flavor can be preserved.
- Put the wrapped Saffron in a clean, airtight bag or container. Make sure that no dust particles are left inside the container by cleaning it with a dry cloth.
- If you are using a freezer bag, not a container, place the bag on the most upper side of the freezer so that the threads can’t be crushed.
- Take out the amount of the Saffron you need, and the rest back in the freezer immediately.
How long does Saffron last?
Well, it depends on the conditions in which it is stored. In a cool and dark place, away from moisture and humidity, it can stay up to 6 months to 1 year. It could be used for up to 2 years if it is properly stored.
It will be in its best form for a year, however after one year, it may lose its quality slowly, or it may start decaying. In the freezer, it can last for up to three years. But it is only possible if it is stored with proper care.

- Saffron does not affect your health, even if it is bad. You could sense odd and flavorless saffron if it is too old.
- You can check the best by or expiry date, which may not be exactly right, but you can estimate the period by adding more time. I would add a year to date myself.
- If you are looking to see if it has gone bad, observe the color, texture, and odor. If there’s any change in it its color, like its color is faded, then it’s best to throw it away.
- When you rub Saffron, and it falls apart like, in a dusty way when rubbed. Then it’s best not to use it because it’s too old.
