How to Store Rice Vinegar
Vinegar could degrade when it is past its shelf life. Rice vinegar is made from the fermentation of rice in the water that it starts producing alcohol. It is then again fermented to reduce into acetic acid.

Place it in a pantry
As we all know, vinegar does not easily degrade as there isn’t bacterial or fungal growth due to its alcoholic nature. The vinegar must be placed in a tight air bottle and be placed in a cool and dry place.
You can refrigerate the bottle as well. Put the vinegar in the fridge in a dry atmosphere. Do not freeze it. You can refrigerate it when you want to use it for a long period and when it is about to expire soon. That way, you can store it for as long as five years.
Away from sunlight
Put the vinegar away from sunlight and heat. If the bottle is kept away from the heat, it can retain its flavor and freshness for much longer.
Use an Appropriate Container
You must pour the vinegar or put it in the glass container or stainless steel, wood, or safe and good quality plastic. Brass, aluminum, or iron material should not be used as a container for rice vinegar storage.
Seal the container
The container must be airtight if the seal is opened, and you do not need the bottle for some time, and you want to save it. It should be placed at room temperature, and doing so can last for almost the best two years.
Can You Freeze Rice Vinegar?
You can freeze rice vinegar, but it does not need to be frozen at all. That way, it can lose its texture, and it may water down it’s aroma and taste when it is to be defrosted.
As we all know that the acidity needs to be at room temperature to stay fresh. If you are refrigerating it, the temperature must be kept between 35-40OF.
If you are refrigerating it, you must check if the bottle or the container you are using is tightly sealed so that, for some reason, it would stay fresh as long as it is possible.
You do not have to shift the container; make sure it is properly sealed and check the expiry date to prevent the vinegar from decaying.
How Long Does Rice Vinegar Last
Due to its acidic nature, rice vinegar stays longer than other food materials. But when it comes in contact with the air, the water is absorbed by acetic acid and carbon dioxide. This reaction dilutes its flavor. The acidic nature does not stay for too long.
Usually, the manufacturing date is set by the best of 2 years. A sealed bottle can stay for as long as ten years. If the bottle is opened, it could stay for as long as five years.
How to Tell If Rice Vinegar is bad
You can always tell when the food starts turning bad. The physical properties and the chemical properties of the food change. The texture the flavor also turns bad.
- Discoloration: some rice vinegar has transparent nature having no color as its texture. Some of them are black. When it starts deteriorating, the color change is very subtle, which indicates that it is going bad now.
- Gross odor: it generally has a pleasant aroma, and when it starts giving a bad odor, it is going bad and discard it immediately.
- Taste: it usually has a sour and a tartaric taste but when it becomes bitter, which is the best indicator of vinegar going bad, discard it right away.
- Lumps in the vinegar: if you feel like there are lumps in the vinegar and which are cloudy or somewhat slimy, which is the mother of the vinegar, and you need not worry about them. It usually forms in the stored bottle when it is kept for a little longer.
