Palm fruit, which is called nungu in Tamil, is a refreshing summer fruit. In British English, it is also called ice-apple because of its transparent flesh looking like ice. Nungu has a fibrous exterior that is edible, while it has juicy, transparent flesh that is like a coolant for the body in hot summers.
The transparent flesh of nungu is in pods covered in brownish skin. The pulp of nungu has a jelly-like texture and is mildly sweet. The exterior of nungu is edible raw or roasted, while you can also eat the pulp raw or use it in juices or other desserts.
How to store nungu?
Nungu can be stored in different forms and at different places depending upon how long you want to use the fruit. Nungu can last from a few days to a few months, depending upon how and where it is stored. Following are some places where nungu can be stored.
In the pantry
If you plan to use the nungu within a few days, storing the whole fruit in a cool, dry place in the pantry is a good choice. You have to ensure that the place it is stored is out of the reach of sunlight or any other form of heat. In this way, nungu can stay fresh for a few days. If the fruit is open and you want to store the flesh in the pantry, it will only last for a few hours if stored properly in an air-tight container.
In the refrigerator
If you want to store the nungu for a week or so, store it in the refrigerator. The cool temperature of the refrigerator will keep nungu fresh for a week, and it will give you a cool refreshing feeling when you eat it out of the fridge.
If you want to store the whole fruit in the refrigerator, wash the fruit first, dry it, and store it in a plastic bag. But if you want to store the ice-like pulp portion of nungu in the fridge, you have to store it in an air-tight container.

Nungu can also be stored in a freezer if you want the fruit to remain fresh for a few months. You can store the whole fruit in a freezer bag, while if you want to store the flesh only, you should make sure you place it in an air-tight jar.
Can you freeze nungu?
Nungu can be frozen if you have it in bulk and want to use it for the next few months. You can store the whole fruit as it is in the freezer. For that, you first have to wash the fruit, dry it from a paper towel, then place it in a freezer bag and store it in the freezer.

Nungu also decays faster if exposed to sunlight. Its appearance, smell, or taste can detect a spoiled nungu fruit. Following are some signs that show if Lungu has gone bad or not:
- Fresh nungu has a bit harder exterior, so if the surface of the fruit will crack open by doing a slight squeeze, it shows that it has gone bad.
- If you see a mold appearing on the fruit, it is time to throw the fruit away.
