Naranjilla is one of the important nightshade fruit, and it is also known as lulo and small orange, although it tastes way different than an orange. Naranjilla has a citrus and acidic taste and looks more like a tomatillo. The exterior of the fruit is orange-red in colour, while the interior is light green.
Because of its tarty flavour, naranjilla is used to make juices and cocktails. You can also use naranjilla to make desserts like ice cream and tarts. Naranjilla can last for a few days to a few weeks depending upon how and where it is stored.
How to store naranjilla?
Naranjilla is one of those fruits that it is best if you consume right away. But if you want to store them, they can last from a few days to even a few months. Naranjilla can be stored in the pantry, refrigerator, or freezer, depending upon how long you want to store it.
In the pantry
Storing the naranjilla in the pantry is the best option to store unripe naranjilla. The dark place in the pantry at room temperature is the best environment for unripe naranjilla to ripe well if stored properly. Remove the stem of the unripe fruit and place the naranjilla on the scarred side downwards.
Placing the naranjilla on the scarred side towards the shelf will prevent the fruit from growing any mould or absorb moisture, and it can ripe well. On the other hand, if the naranjilla is already riped, you should use it fresh right away. Storing the riped naranjilla on the counter is not recommended.
In the refrigerator
The unripe naranjilla should not be stored anywhere else other than the pantry because the environment in a pantry is best suitable to ripen the unripe fruit. While if you want to store the riped naranjilla for some time, you can store it in the refrigerator. The cooler temperature of the refrigerator will slow down the ripening process of the naranjilla and keep it for a week or so.
Whenever you wish to use the refrigerated naranjilla, take it out of the fridge and let it thaw for at least a day before using it. It will restore most of the lost flavours of the fruit.

If you want to wish to store naranjilla for a few months, it is better to freeze them.
Can you freeze naranjilla?
Naranjilla can be frozen if you want to store them for a long. Although freezing the unripe naranjilla is not recommended, you can freeze the ripped ones to increase shelf life. First, to freeze the naranjilla, place them on a baking tray and place it in the freezer.
Once frozen, please put them in a bag and store them in the freezer, and they are good to go for a few months. Whenever you wish to use the frozen naranjilla, take it out of the freezer and let it thaw for some time. Thawed naranjilla is soft, so you can only use them in cooking.
How long does naranjilla last?
Naranjilla can last from a few days to a few months, depending upon how and where you store them. You cannot store the riped naranjilla on the counter, while you can store the unripped one on the counter, and they can last from three days to a week in the pantry. You have to ensure that they are stored in a ventilated bag.
On the other hand, unripe naranjilla cannot be stored other than in the pantry, while you can store the ripped ones other than the pantry. If you wish to store the naranjilla for a few weeks, storing them in the refrigerator is better. Refrigerated naranjilla can last for two to three weeks at a dry place in the fridge. In the freezer, naranjilla can be stored for two to three months. So if you have the fruit in bulk and want to use it for a few months, freezing them is the best.
How to tell if naranjilla is bad?
You can tell if naranjilla has decayed or not by looking at it, smelling or tasting it. Following are a few signs that show if naranjilla has spoiled:
- If a mould appears on the surface or wrinkles or black spots appear on the skin of naranjilla, it is spoiled.
- If you notice any liquid coming out of the fruit on a slight squeeze, throw the fruit away.
- Rotten naranjilla will also give off a foul smell, so you can detect a spoiled naranjilla by smelling.
- If you notice any fruit flies flying around naranjilla, it is a sign that the fruit has decayed. You should get rid of it as soon as possible.
- You can also tell if naranjilla is fresh to use or not by touching it. If you feel that the fruit has become soft, it means that it has spoiled.
