Milk kefir is a dairy item, so there could be multiple reasons for it to go bad. Milk kefir is fermented; like all other products, it also goes bad, but contrary, the shelf life is more, and if you think the fermented milk will not go bad, you’re wrong then.

Store in a Container
The kefir shall be stored in a proper container. It usually comes in plastic bottles, and plastic is not good for health and as well as for milk both. So, the milk should be transferred to a clean glass jar.
Although it is an extra investment being environment friendly and good for the lifespan of milk kefir, you can use them. Your milk kefir will last for a longer time in such containers.
Keep away from Sunlight
If the already spoiled milk is kept under the exposure of Sunlight, its consistency may be disturbed. It is because the bacteria are already present in there, and exposure to heat may activate them. If exposed, the already sour taste of kefir will become worse. Therefore, kefir should be placed in a cool place for it not to go bad.
Keep in the Refrigerator
The milk kefir can be stored in the refrigerator to retain its freshness for the longest. However, instead of keeping it in the door, you should put it in the corner. The reason for doing this is the temperature in the corner is more suitable than the temperature at the door.
After opening the bottle, the shelf life of milk kefir becomes less; therefore, you should keep it sealed compactly and, when not in use, store it in the refrigerator. The more the storage place is chilled, the more will be the life of milk. It will not go bad after storing it in the freezer, but the nutrition level will ultimately decrease.
Can you freeze milk kefir?
Multiple opinions exist on either we shall freeze the milk kefir or not. More shreds of evidence against it because after freezing and thawing, the separation of liquids from solids occurs. After you blend the mixture, the texture of it won’t be the same. In simple words, it will not turn back to its original consistency.
However, if you want to freeze your milk kefir, it would be better to store it in an ice cube tray or small jars. By doing this, you can easily consume the portion of frozen milk kefir that you need.
How long does milk kefir last?
Like all other products, the milk kefir also comes with an expiration date carved on the label. After the expiration date, the unopened bottle can still be kept well for a week. The thing is that it would be different in taste.
If the bottle is opened, it will expire on the date mentioned on the label. The opened bottle normally lasts only last for five days with a strong taste. The lasting time will only be limited to 24 hours opened after the expiration date.
If kefir is unopened, the label has a sell-by date, and mostly it is sold by date carved, then it would last more than a week. But contrary to that, the kefir naturally made at home could last for more than 3-4 weeks.
How to tell if milk kefir is bad?
When kefir is fresh, the texture is creamy as it comes with different varieties the flavor depends on it; the taste of kefir that is plain will be sweetish tart.
Following are the signs if your kefir has gone bad:
- The color will be transformed.
- The taste and smell will be sour.
- It will be difficult to pour the product and will be chunky.
- On the surface, there will be nebulous growth.
- The separated liquid floats on top of other ingredients.
You can drink it even after the expiration date if the taste is okay. However, it would be best if you discarded it right after it tastes sour. If you see any of the above signs in kefir, forcing yourself to drink makes no sense.
