As we know, veggies have a small shelf-life and they usually last for few days. The same is the case with asparagus, but you can stretch its life by storing them under favorable conditions.
Asparagus is usually preserved by an unconventional method. To store asparagus, you have to choose fresh asparagus from the grocery store. The easiest way to distinguish between fresh and stale asparagus is by examining the bottom of spears, which should be hard.
After that, there are three ways used to store asparagus.
It’s the method that requires no hacks or tricks. You put them in free of moisture vegetable cabinet in your kitchen by this method asparagus can stay suitable for somewhere around two to three days.
Wrapping the bottom of asparagus with a wet paper towel
It’s another easy way in which you have to cover the bottom part of asparagus with a wet paper towel or any damp fabric. It also helps in keeping the asparagus fresh for up to 5-6 days. In this way, the water molecules present on wet paper towels or fabric are transported throughout the asparagus stalk, keeping them fresh and crunchy.
Putting asparagus in the refrigerator increases its life by keeping them fresh for 10-14 days. Its method of storage is different than the usual method we apply to refrigerate veggies. This method is best to keep your asparagus fresh and snappy for several days.
At first, you need to cut them from the bottom for about one inch and cutting them. Then, fill a glass jar with a small amount of water and place the stalks of asparagus in it in such a way that the bottom of the asparagus should be immersed in water. After that, you need to put that jar in the refrigerator and change the water every day.
Can you freeze asparagus?
You can easily freeze asparagus. All you have to do is wash it thoroughly remove the bottom of the spear. After that, if you want to freeze the whole, you can cut it into small pieces. You can either steam or boil them while boiling, and you have to scald them in boiling water for 2-3 minutes.
Take asparagus out of the boiling pot and place it in ice-cold water; once it’s thoroughly cooled, you have to drain the water and allow asparagus to dry. After that, please place them in airtight jars. Set that airtight jar into your freezer. In this way, you can store asparagus for 8-12 months.
How long does asparagus last?
Vegetables usually don’t last for a more extended period. Similarly, asparagus can last for three to five days. However, you can expand its life by providing proper storage conditions.
Asparagus and other leafy vegetables have the likelihood to develop bacterial and fungal growth. The reason for this is as microorganisms like molds, bacteria, and fungi present in the air, and they require water and nutrition to grow as vegetables have a high content of water in them.
When exposed to air, microorganisms get attached to the asparagus surface resulting in discoloration and rotting. The discoloration is usually due to photodegradation when asparagus is exposed to light.
Without applying accurate preserving methods, you are unable to store them for an extended period. Commonly after 3-4 days, asparagus usually acquire mold formation, and its stalks become mushy and pappy, changing its color from vibrant green to pale green.
How to tell if asparagus is terrible?

- The first you need to do is to select fresh and vibrant green color spears and tips. Try to avoid those which are spoiled.
- Sniff your asparagus. If it smells terrible, it means that you have to discard it as fresh asparagus is odorless.
- Look at the tips of asparagus. If they turn yellow, it’s the sign that your asparagus is no longer fresh.
- Do examine asparagus spears if they are firm. It means that your asparagus is fresh, but it’s better to avoid it if they turn soft.
- If the spears of asparagus get thick and rigid, it’s probably an indication that your asparagus is about to turn nasty.
