Does Acorn Squash Go Bad?

Acorn squash is a winter squash related to butternut squash and spaghetti squash. It is called acorn squash because it looks a lot like an acorn. If you notice its shape, it has ridges on the sides and pointed from the bottom, and the top is a little bit flatter.

Sometimes they are orange, green, or the combination of two colors—no matter what color, they all are considered acorn squash. Nutritionally acorn squash is high in vitamin A and C. It’s loaded with antioxidants.

So you have got a high nutrient ingredient which is also very low in calories. It has a mildly sweet and nutty flavor. It tastes best when baked and drizzled with a little bit of maple syrup. Like any food, it cannot go well. Two main factors that can make acorn squash bad are bacterial and fungal growth.

How to store acorn squash?

Acorn squash is stored easily for a month at a dry and cool temperature. But if you cut it into pieces, you can keep it for 4-5 days in the refrigerator only if it is tightly packed so no air can get in it.

Use Wrapping Paper

We can use wrapping paper and zip-lock plastic bags for this purpose. If acorn squash is steamed, it can be stored in the freezer. If you buy acorn squash from the shop, you don’t know for how long it’s already been stored in the shop.

It has a very short lifespan of storage. On the other hand, if you grow it in your house, you know how long it has been plucked from the tree and has a long storage lifespan.

Cut it Before Storing

If you want to cook it typically in the oven, you have to cut it right from the middle, and you will have like two halves. Get the seeds out, and then cook them in the oven. Some people usually cut it from the long way and scoop out the seeds t that way with a spoon’s help.

Peel it for Storing

Another way is to peel the corn squash and cut it into chunks; you can either bake them with other squashes or roast them with salt and butter, garlic, or seasonings like that. The best is to store them for winter and then use them for soups and stews as fillers.

Can you freeze acorn squash?

Acorn squash can get easily frozen, but you need to remove its skin using a potato peeler and then cut it into pieces before freezing. The size of the details depends upon your choice. You must clean it from the inside by removing its seeds.

Cook them and place acorn squash’s in the airtight container or a ziplock bag. Make sure no air is in the bag or box—seal acorn squash before freezing. If acorn squash is steamed, it can be frozen. Before freezing, acorn squash is cooked first, and you can mash it or leave it in pieces in an airtight bag/container; then, it can be frozen for later use for about 10-12 months.

You can refrigerate freshly cooked acorn squash for up to four days. If we make acorn squash soup and then freeze it, yes, it freezes great! But thaw in the fridge a night before you want to serve it to your guest or before having it.

How long does acorn squash last?

Acorn squash mainly lasts approximately two months. If stored at a normal room temperature, it will last about one to two months. If acorn squash is uncooked, it will be better to use it within two weeks of purchase.

Usually, the fresh winter squashes last for 1-3 months on the counter, and freshly chopped or sliced winter acorn squash go good for 2-5 days—a cooked acorn squash which is perfectly sealed and refrigerated or frozen that can last for 12 months.

The difference between the refrigerated and freshly acorn squash is that the refrigerated one lasts for only 14 days while the other fresh one, which is in the cool cellular storage that can last for 365 days.

How to tell if acorn squash is bad?

  • If you want to check if acorn squash is gone bad or not, cut it from the right-center, and the slimy and grey seeds are the main sign that shows that acorn squash has turned bad.
  • When you slice acorn squash into two slices, there are no spots if there is no mold or rots inside it. It determines that acorn squash is still fine, but its original color is changed, which is deep green when it goes bad. Its taste also slight changes from the original one.
  • The important thing to be aware of is that acorn squash contains a toxic compound known as cucurbitacin. E, which is extremely poisonous but very rare, is usually called poisoning squash syndrome. If the flesh of acorn squash is dull in color and is spoiled in addition to it, when it gets bad, it starts to smell weird. It means it’s the right time to throw it.
