1. Le Creuset Enameled Cast Iron Signature Dutch Oven

Le Creuset Enameled Cast Iron Signature Dutch Oven

Engineered by one of the finest and oldest kitchen companies, Le Creuset, this magnificent Dutch oven is amazing. Each piece is cast individually in the sand and then hand-inspected by engineers to ensure you get the best.  This Dutch oven can be used on a glass or gas burner, induction plates, electric cooktops, or directly into the oven grill.

Featured here is the popular Sauteuse model, which has sloping sides that capture higher moisture content before a heavy lid is shut tight for cooking. This ensures that the steam returns to the food dish internally, keeping it moisturized and tender.

A gallantry soldier in the Dutch oven cooking stands tall for a multi-disciplinary use of cooking styles.  It can be used for braising, sautéing, frying, searing, or reducing and simmering food.  This heavy-duty oven can cook traditional dishes like a chuck roast, a coq au vin, or a braised chicken, and of course, many more.

A smooth and tough vitreous enamel layer is coated on this grand Le Creuset oven and the lid. This prevents any staining, dulling, chipping, or cracking of the surface.  The enamel coat also makes the oven ready to use and does away with otherwise seasoning a cast iron pot before use. An enamel coat layering is a must-have to keep food hygienic safe.  The enamel coat prevents sticking of burnt or stains and allows caramelization of food that gives it a unique appeal.

The enamel coat provides a shine when in use and is easy to maintain using a soft cloth, making it an attraction to your dining table. This Le Creuset Dutch oven can be moved safely and easily, using handles provided on either side. We recommend using cooking/baking gloves to handle a hot Dutch oven, even when opening and closing the lid.

This oven is safe for cooking up to 500o F.   Featured here is the 3.5 quarts (3.3 litres/ 112 ounces) size, which weighs just over 10 pounds, easy for you to use. The Le Creuset is a nearly 100 years old company, keeping the tradition alive from France (home base), UK and the USA.

Dutch Ovens’ Buyer’s Guide

With a wide range of Dutch ovens available, reviewing and buying them can be overwhelming. For your ease, here are some important points to consider that will help you make your decision.

Material

Traditionally, Dutch ovens, more often than not, made of cast iron, enamel-coated cast iron, aluminium, or stainless steel. The material determines the even distribution of heat that enables slow cooking, the weight, durability, and ease of maintenance of Dutch ovens.  Aluminium is not a preferred material as it can leech with the use of acidic foods, making your food unsafe unless it has been seasoned well or is enamel coated.

Warranty

Many major manufacturers offer some warranty against defects in material and quality. Le Creuset and Lodge offer a limited lifetime warranty. Do read through the manufacturer’s terms and warranty coverage to ensure you have a durable Dutch oven.

Size

Dutch ovens can be found in various sizes.  As a thumb rule, one quart serves one person. So take a pause and think about the size you need. What you cook in it also determines the minimum size that you need. For example, you cannot expect an entire chicken to be braised in a 2-quart Dutch oven.

Shape

Round and oval-shaped Dutch ovens are the two most commonly available shapes. While a round shape sits well on a burner, the oval shape needs to be preheated for even distribution of heat. The round shape allows stirring, boiling, and sautéing; oval shapes are good for braising meat and accommodating food items like pork chops or a full chicken that snugly fits in.

Lids, knobs & handles

Lids hold a critical role in cooking in a Dutch oven cooking. They need to fit well, locking in the steam. If you have a tempered glass lid, it allows you to monitor food being cooked. Dome-shaped lids with smooth interior surfaces are preferred as they send moisture back down the sides of the oven, while flattering lids with bumps or ridges on the inside offer a self-basting feature by redirecting any condensation directly down into the oven.

While the knobs are usually metallic for aesthetics, they are non-conducive to heat.  That will give you higher safety and not scald you or the diner while using it.  If the knobs are made of any other material like rubber or plastic, confirm from the manufacturers that they can withstand higher temperatures.  You want to ensure that you are safe and do not burn yourself just as you are cooking or about to serve a great meal. Sturdy and spacious handles allow you greater mobility and safety.  Some prefer extra-large handles enabling them to wear baking /cooking gloves for protection.

For Dutch ovens used over fireplaces or in camping, consider wire handles made of galvanized tempered steel. They should also be sturdy enough to carry the oven’s weight and the food being cooked inside.

The use of a trivet is highly recommended to keep your kitchen or tabletops and you safe. Additionally, consider buying thick potholders to prevent burns on surfaces.

Heating Capacity

Refer to the manufacturer’s guide for your Dutch oven’s maximum heat limit. Usually equipped to handle heat between 250o F to 500 o F, Dutch ovens ensure hassle-free cooking.
